Artist Spotlight 01: Nakeya Brown

My earliest experiences with art were with framed prints hanging on the walls of our home. Those images from floral vases in 80’s lacquer frames to reproduction prints of black art have stuck with me. So when I think of home decor, art has always been a big part of that. For this reason, I want to always highlight artists that inspire me, past and present.
There is an image that stuck firmly in my head when I first started brainstorming Mass Over Matter and what this shop would become visually. It was an image that reminded me how one object, photographed, can say so much. It reminded me of the vintage nostalgia and how quickly objects can spark memories.

I later searched and rediscovered the pieces and the artist, Nakeya Brown. The images I’d previously come across were from her “Hair Stories Untold” series. Nakeya’s work has a way of capturing the essence of black experiences using vintage objects.

After browsing my Pinterest board, I discover that I’d also previously loved pieces from her “If Nostalgia Were Colored Brown” series:

Be sure to check out more of Nakeya Brown’s work on her site as well as shop for vintage home decor on ours.
You Matter,
Lindsey
